FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions About Art Therapy
Why art therapy vs. talk therapy?
Art therapy is a form of therapy that uses creative expression—like drawing, painting, or sculpting—as a way to explore emotions, process experiences, and support healing. It’s especially helpful when words are hard to find.
Unlike traditional talk therapy, art therapy gives clients another language—the language of images, color, and movement—to express what’s going on inside.

Do I need to be an artist?
Not at all! Many clients have no prior art experience. We use art as a tool to explore, express, and process thoughts and emotions in a safe, supported way.
What happens in a typical session?
Each session is shaped by your goals. We might talk, make art, or do both. You’ll be guided in creative processes like drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, or even movement — depending on what’s right for you. Some people like to work spontaneously and see what arises; then we may process the art together.
